At first it was the internet that took the world by storm.
There were E-mails that let people communicate in private at the click of a
mouse. Then came the concept of getting information about anything under the
sky using the search engines. This was followed by social interactions on the
social network sites. However nothing brought a revolution greater than online
marketing. People had the opportunity to sell as well as buy from an
unimaginable array of customers and sellers across the world. All from within
the comfortable confines of the four walls of your home. With the passage of
time almost everyone had a business venture online. The competition grew. The
competition here was more because there were thousands of sites one was
competing with, all serving the same set of probable customers and prospective
buyers.
The search engines
came into play and they lay down measures that led to the ranking of the sites.
These rankings further governed the visibility of these sights. As and when
someone searched for a keyword in the search engines, the search engines made
an effort to give the best possible results to the users to search for. These
were based on the reputation that the sites managed to build for themselves on
the basis of the requirements laid down by the search engines. This was called
search engine optimization.
There were several techniques involved in search engine
optimization. Some of these were usage of appropriate keywords, page titles,
links, word links and fresh, quality, updated content. The search engines
ranked the sites on these techniques. With increasing competition people
resorted to malpractices linked with techniques of search engine optimization.
Finally on 24th April 2012 google came up with a new
algorithm the SEO Penguin Recovery that helped arrest these malpractices and
resulted in loss of ranking of sites that had resorted to black hat search
optimization techniques.
Some of these black hat techniques as they are called were
as follows. Keyword stuffing where professionals resorted to over stuffing the
web pages with the keywords. Search engines then came up with a fresh set of
guidelines that allowed a certain percentage of usage of these key words called
as keyword density. SEO Penguin Recovery did wonders arresting the malpractice.
Another malpractice was that of cloaking where efforts were
made to deceive a search engine into leading the user to a site which was otherwise
not likely to be featured on the world wide web. This was done under the garb
of another appropriate content not linked to the actual content on the site,
which was fed to the search engine spider threads. This enabled users to post
content under the garb of a more appropriate one. These could be page titles
which are meant to summarize the page content and the page title could be
totally different from what the page actually deals with or contains. As google
rated sites on the basis of number of links that led people to a particular
site, users resorted to selling and buying of these links.
There were also incidents of content
duplication. With SEO Penguin Recovery these defaulter sites lost their
rankings.
